Today we started class with a discussion about why coal is not a mineral.  Concepts discussed today were some of the differences between surface mining and subsurface mining.  We had a good review of phosphates and limestone (2 major resources mined in Georgia in addition to Kaolin).  A shout out to fourth period for their great job connecting limestone to concepts we studied in the past.  Remember surface mining is much worse for the environment than subsurface mining, but subsurface mining is much more dangerous for humans than surface mining.  Subsurface mining for coal is dangerous because of black lung disease, possible entrapment from cave-ins, carbon monoxide poisoning (canary in the coal mine), and explosions because of the buildup of explosive gases in the tunnels.

First 30 minutes of class is reading and working on your reflection for Chapter 4 of Gross Deceptive Product.  Chapter 4 is titled Environmentalism.  Your reflection should include the following terminology – developing country, developed country, poverty, affluenza, total fertility rate, sustainability, and global warming (underline these words as you use them in your reflection). 

  • On page 62 the author stated “continuous economic growth is unsustainable in the long term.”  What do you think is the meaning of that statement?  
  • Do you think it is right for a developed country to dictate how developing countries use their natural resources?  Explain.  (from p.63)
  • If you were to create an environmental group, what would be your mission?  Why?

Be prepared for a “spot” check on your reflections for the book anytime during this unit.

Homework: Watch the following three videos.  The first video is about deep sea mining.  This is a cool 3 minute video.  As you watch this video, think about how mining in the deep ocean will effect the deep ocean ecosystems.  What do you think about deep sea mining?  Remember, parts of the ocean belong to no one country…so who has claim to  the seafloor?  The second video is on gold mining and is from the documentary “Hunting the Elements.”  Some of you may have seen this documentary in your Chemistry class last year.  The third video is how a coal-fired power plant works.  This video takes you inside the coal-fired power plant and you can see all the things we have been talking about this semester.  At the end of the video you should be able to use the correct terminology to discuss how a coal -fired power plant uses water to create electricity and how they deal with the air pollutants produced from using coal as an energy source.

Today was another Whiteboard Day.  Our focus today was on our use of different fuel sources and the consequences for using these fuel sources (petroleum, coal, uranium, algae, corn, sugar, bitumen, and kerogen).

Pop quiz has been moved to March 14.  The pop quiz will include Module 35.

Happy Pi Day!  Today was not about Pi, but about fossil fuels.  We had a pop quiz prior to our class discussion.  Anyone absent should plan to arrive to school by 8am tomorrow to take the pop quiz.  A big shout out to Fourth Period today.  Fourth period did an excellent job with the warm up question.  Fourth period shared several different ways the use of fossil fuels affects the environment – sediment pollution from mining operations or coal ash spills, coal ash (tailings), global climate change, habitat loss, loss of biodiversity, loss of keystone species, oil spills, acid rain, and cyanide poisoning (tailings ponds).

We still need to work on our understanding of the Greenhouse Effect and global climate change.  Be sure to look at one of the very early blog postings.  And below is a video you need to watch.  I am thinking a pop quiz only on the greenhouse effect (free response…not multiple choice).

Homework:  Students should be done with Module 36 and working on Module 37 (Chapter 13).  The mindmap students started today should be done by Thursday and students should have followed instructions provided.  Reminder – at the top of this page is the link for the Google Doc which has the Module assignments along with due dates and what information your notes should cover.  

An email will go out tonight about Units 5 and 6 Recovery.  Students need to show 70% of homework completion before I accept Recovery work.

Beginning of our discussion on alternative energy sources.  The introduction to alternative energy sources video we watched will be part of the next pop quiz.  The next pop quiz will be over Modules 37 and 38 in addition to the video we watched in class today.

Discussion about automobiles using alternative fuel sources.  Class began with pop quiz #2.  Makeup is during 5th pd tomorrow or at 7:50am tomorrow.

We discussed the pros and cons for using BEVs, hybrids, fuel-cell, ethanol, and biodiesel as alternatives for gasoline.  See the video below about hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.

Today we completed our discussion of Unit 7 after Pop Quiz #3 (makeup for pop quiz is before school at 8am or during first part of 5th pd lunch).  I want you to think about how important petroleum is to humankind.  Below is a partial list of “things” made from petroleum.  When we think of alternative energy sources, we need to think about how the using of alternative energy sources will help keep petroleum around for a longer time – we need to find ways to extend this nonrenewable resource.
